June 1, 2010: Installing Omeka
My first Omeka Blog entry. I had a nice time installing Omeka over the weekend. I followed the very nice instructions, Install Omeka on Ubuntu Linux by Tom Hohenstein, with edits by Shane Landrum. It went surprisingly well. Then I installed a few plugins, including:
- Geolocation Plugin from the makers of Omeka, Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, George Mason University.
- The Time Line Plugin by by the Scholars' Lab at the University of Virginia Library.
- The Simple Pages Plugin so I can write this blog!!
- And finally, the Dublin Core Extended Plugin because I wanted to see if it had any improved facilities for capturing dates. More on this layer.
It all seemed to go very well and I was able to register my first image -- Road Runner with geolocation!!!.
Overall, I am very impressed with the way this installation has gone. I would have expected more problems than this! There are a few feature requests that I could think of at this point, for example:
Feature Ideas
- a nice calendar picker for date fields,
- More picklists for controlled vocabulary and form field validation.
- At least a suggested template for date formats ought to be included in the little captions under each field.
- Better integration of the Geolocation tool with the Dublin Core coverage field... But we wil lget to that.
As the project continues, I will keep trackof my experiences here and look forward to collaborating with all of the amazingly talented folks who have put this tool together.
