ICFA.NA.0545, Nicholas V. Artamonoff Collection, Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives, Dumbarton Oaks.

Evgeni Vernigora and his sister Tatyana (Thilmany) photographed by Artamonoff in Istanbul, 1940s.

The parents of the Vernigora children were among the Russian refugees who landed in Istanbul in the aftermath of the Bolshevik revolution. While living in the dormitory style apartments of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Panteleimon in Karaköy, they met another Russian refugee family, the Volkoffs, whose daughter Natalie later married Nicholas Artamonoff. Vernigora siblings have shared their reminiscences of Artamonoff and generously donated two photographs by Artamonoff to ICFA, Dumbarton Oaks.
