Tower of Anemas, interior L-shaped chamber, March 1937.
An unidentified man holding a torch is caught inside the Tower of Anemas, part of the twelfth-century Blakhernai Palace. The high vaulted ceiling dwarfs the man who is posing for his companion Artamonoff. In a small cavity of the wall are stashed a camera and a book, most likely Alexander Van Millingen’s Byzantine Constantinople (1899), that guided them along the way.
