Artamonoff’s photographic activity coincides with the period when archaeological investigations of Byzantine remains were increasing in number and scope throughout Istanbul. He was well placed at Robert College, which had inherited the work of former History professor and renowned Byzantine architectural historian Alexander Van Millingen. Artamonoff strolled through the Byzantine remains in Van Millingen’s footsteps. He also zealously followed the new finds uncovered by foreign and Turkish scholars and institutions in Istanbul.
