The propylaeum (entranceway) of St. Sophia reconstructed by Theodosius II in 404-15, June 1939.
The sculptural and architectural fragments of the pre-Justinianic church were excavated by German archaeologist Alfons Maria Schneider in 1935-6. Sven Larsen used Artamonoff’s photographs of St. Sophia in his article, “A Forerunner of Hagia Sophia,” published in the American Journal of Archaeology in 1937.
