Entrance of the Prison of Anemas, March 1937.

Artamonoff strolled through the Byzantine remains of Istanbul, guided by the scholarship of Alexander Van Millingen, Byzantine architectural historian and former RC History professor. Indeed, the man in the photograph (unidentified) is holding Van Millingen’s seminal work, Byzantine Constantinople: The Walls of the City and Adjoining Historical Sites, published in 1899.
