View from Edirne Kapı (Gate of Charisius) towards Fatih Camii, 1935.

Taken from atop Edirne Kapı (Gate of Charisius) at one of the highest points of the Byzantine Land Walls, Artamonoff captures a city on the cusp of transformation. Following the diagonal of Fevzi Paşa Caddesi the eye is drawn past neighborhoods until reaching the dramatic skyline created by several of Istanbul’s major Ottoman mosque complexes.
