View of Karaköy square and the Galata Bridge, 1931.

This photograph, one of the earliest examples in the Artamonoff Collection, highlights a Karaköy that architecturally no longer exists. The distinctive Karaköy Mosque (1903) in the middle of the frame bracketed by two buildings was designed by Italian architect Raimondo D’Aronco, yet was destroyed in 1958 by a new urban development plan initiated by Adnan Menderes.
